The Accountant & Finance Department Supervisor plays a critical role in our organization's success by overseeing accounting and financial/fiscal management. This position requires a strategic thinker who can not only manage day-to-day financial and accounting functions but also provides valuable financial and investment insights to drive the company's fiscal goals. The ideal candidate is proficient in accounting and financial management, possesses strong financial analysis and organizational skills, has a passion for numbers, a keen eye for accuracy, and a commitment to our companyā€™s financial health and operational efficiencies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial processing and procedures ensuring compliance with accounting policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform general ledger accounting, including journal entries, expense reports, reconciliations, depreciation, adjustments, process month-end entries, bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare and maintain financial records and reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Manage workload of accounts payable and receivable clerk(s), ensuring the timely processing.
  • Management of treasury; transfer funds between bank accounts, companies, trusts and currencies, as required for optimal cash management. Monitor and manage cash flow.
  • Investment accounts administration and management.
  • Preparation of all government filing, including payroll remittances, GST/HST returns, etc., ensuring compliance. Ensure that all statutory requirements of the organization are met, including payroll withholding remittances, EHT, HST and income tax/tax documents (T4, T2200 etc.)
  • Process and accurately report and record payroll, financial programs and benefits, commissions, budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Year-end processing and reporting. Work with external accounting professionals/firms.
  • Conduct financial analysis to support business decisions.
  • Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and information.

The Accountant & Finance Department Supervisor must possess a strong comprehension of accounting principles and practices, and financial investment skills to effectively manage the organization's finances. Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy are necessary to maintain precise financial records and ensure regulatory compliance. Must have the required financial analysis skills for assessing investment opportunities, portfolio management for optimizing asset allocation, tax planning to minimize liabilities, and market analysis for making informed decisions.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have five (5) years of experience with a degree/diploma in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Consideration of seven (7) years of work experience in a similar role along with other relevant education will also be considered. Preference will be given to those with a professional designation (CPA, CMA, CA, CGA).

Incumbent must have a strong understanding of accounting and financial reporting principles and practices and possess an analytical mind with proficiency in numbers, attention to detail, and a desire to probe further into data. Must be skilled in a computerized environment and be proficient in all Microsoft applications with a high skill level in Excel. Highly skilled in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, Sage). Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software is required. Knowledge of Spire ERP would be considered an asset. Familiar with virtual communication tools (MS Teams, Zoom, WebEx).

This role requires a detail-oriented individual with strong problem-solving and analytical skills to identify and resolve financial discrepancies. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential for smooth financial operations and building trust with stakeholders.

The ideal candidate must stay updated with financial regulations, accounting standards, and industry trends, maintaining a continuous learning mentality. Confidentiality and discretion with sensitive information are crucial. Logical reasoning and sound decision-making skills are needed to assess risks and ensure compliance and financial health.

Adaptability and a proactive attitude are important for anticipating and addressing financial challenges. Effective stress management is necessary to handle tight deadlines and high workloads, especially during month-end and year-end closings.
