A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) supplies firefighters with their own compressed air source, letting them work safely in smoke, oxygen-deficient atmospheres, and other IDLH environments. Unlike an air-purifying respirator, an SCBA carries its own air rather than filtering ambient air, which is critical since fireground atmospheres often do not have enough oxygen to filter safely. A full system includes a facepiece, regulator, harness, cylinder, and PASS device, certified under NFPA 1970 (2025 edition), the standard that consolidated the former NFPA 1981. A.J. Under NFPA 1850 (2026 edition), which consolidated the former NFPA 1852, an SCBA assigned to an individual should be inspected at the beginning of each duty period, and units carried on apparatus but not individually assigned should be inspected at least weekly, with no more than one week between inspections. Flow testing on a calibrated test bench is required at least annually, and additionally before a unit enters service, after any repair or rebuild, and after a severe exposure. Inspections should cover cylinders, facepieces, regulators, PASS devices, and harness components, since a failure in any one can put a firefighter at risk on scene. NFPA 1850 also introduced SCBA retirement language: units retire at 15 years from date of manufacture, extendable to 20 years where the owner installs manufacturer upgrade kits that keep the unit within two editions of the current standard. Turnout gear must be retired no more than 10 years from its date of manufacture. This is a mandatory retirement requirement, not an inspection trigger, and it applies regardless of how lightly the gear has been used or how well it has been cared for. Two details departments frequently miss: the clock runs from the manufacture date rather than the date the gear entered service, and each ensemble element carries its own date, so a coat, pant, helmet, hood, gloves, and boots can all age out at different times. Gear must also be retired earlier than 10 years if it is contaminated beyond cleaning, damaged beyond repair, or fails an advanced inspection. Essential structural PPE includes bunker gear, a helmet, gloves, a hood, boots, SCBA, and eye protection. NFPA 1970 (2025 edition), which consolidated the former NFPA 1971, governs how these pieces are certified to work together as a full ensemble. Missing or mismatched components, such as a hood that does not interface correctly with the SCBA facepiece, can create gaps that are not obvious until they matter.

A CAFS injects compressed air into a foam-and-water solution before it reaches the nozzle, producing foam with higher velocity and lower expansion than water alone. The FIREBULL F3 Climate Control Premix -40°C uses a proprietary additive, not antifreeze, to withstand temperatures down to -40°C, so departments in colder regions of Canada are not stuck choosing between foam performance and freeze protection. Note that this product is a premix rather than a concentrate, so it requires no dilution. A separate FIREBULL A/B Climate Control concentrate rated to -40°C is also available if you would rather stay on a concentrate. Class A foam is a wetting agent designed for structural and wildland fires involving ordinary combustibles like wood and paper, helping water penetrate material more effectively. FIREBULL A/B Concentrate is built to handle both Class A materials and Class B flammable liquids, giving departments broader coverage from a single concentrate if their call volume includes vehicle or flammable-liquid fires. The Sensor Warranty Replacement program lets departments claim a replacement MSA ALTAIR XCell® sensor under warranty rather than paying full price for a suspected defective unit. After submitting the required serial number and date code, a representative from A.J. Stone's service department follows up on the request.

The date code and serial number are printed on the back of the detector. The sensor's own serial number is located inside the unit. If you are not comfortable accessing it, contact our service team and we will walk you through it or handle the lookup for you. Before sending in an LEL/Pentane sensor, fully charge the detector, leave it powered off for 24 hours, and recalibrate, since this resolves many apparent sensor faults without needing a replacement. A flashing End-of-Life indicator sometimes just means the detector needs a fresh calibration rather than a sensor replacement, so try another bump test or a full calibration first.
