The fundamental goal of any respiratory protection program is to control occupational diseases caused by breathing air contaminated with harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, and/or vapors. The defense against these contaminants is simple: Keep them out of the air that workers breathe. Always implement engineering and/or administrative controls first. If contaminants still present a hazard, you must provide appropriate respiratory protection for every employee who might be exposed to them.
The 7 Key Elements
Chances are that you are already familiar with the need for and use of respirators in your workplace, but as with anything else, it doesn’t hurt to review your current program against standard operating procedures governing the selection and use of respirators. According to program details in OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134), the seven key elements that every respiratory protection program should contain are: 1.
| A written plan detailing how the program will be administered | 2.
| A complete assessment and knowledge of respiratory hazards that will be encountered in the workplace | | 3. | Procedures and equipment to control respiratory hazards, including the use of engineering controls and work practices designed to limit or reduce employee exposures to such hazards | 4.
| Guidelines for the proper selection of appropriate respiratory protective equipment | 5.
| An employee training program covering hazard recognition, the dangers associated with respiratory hazards, and proper care and use of respiratory protective equipment | 6.
| Inspection, maintenance, and repair of respiratory protective equipment | 7.
| Medical surveillance of employees |
Fit Testing is required for any face mask (full or half) designed to have a tight seal along the face, whether it is used in a positive- or negative-pressure mode, and whether it is disposable or not.
| | | | | | | ADVANTAGE 200 LS RESPIRATOR
| | | | | | Upon inhalation, the air stream flows through the cartridges, which remove contaminants, so the wearer breathes in clean, fresh air. The Advantage 200 LS respirator is approved by NIOSH for use against a variety of respiratory hazards. The Advantage 200 LS Respirator Offers unmatched fit and comfort with a clear blue facepiece. The thermoplastic rubber reduces 25% of the weight and adds softness to MSA's Advantage 200 LS respirator. The patented MultiFlex® System equalizes pressure on the face-seal area, while delivering exceptional stability, so the respirator will not collapse during wear. The Anthro Curve sealing surface instantly conforms to each wearer’s unique facial characteristics. Current Advantage 200 Respirator wearers require no additional fit testing. | | | | | | | | | ADVANTAGE 3200 RESPIRATOR | | | | |
| | The Advantage 3200 Full-Face Respirator incorporates MSA’s global engineering expertise and is designed to meet NIOSH and EN standards. The respirator features a wraparound lens combined with a soft, pliable silicone facepiece that provides a total solution to your air-purifying respirator needs. Its fit technology is based on the proven face seal of the Ultra Elite Facepiece, which was based on facial measurements from more than 8,000 people. For the utmost in convenience, the Advantage 3200 uses the same cartridges and filters as the Advantage 200 LS Respirator. The Advantage 3200 Respirator enhances worker performance through a new design that allows even lower breathing resistance and includes a standard nose cup that reduces fogging in low temperatures or high humidity conditions.
In addition, the facepiece lens has a scratch-resistant coating and has been engineered to be optically correct, giving you superior visibility and peripheral vision. Donning the mask is made easier with pre-adjustable rubber straps. With the Advantage 3000 Respirator, you can set the position of the upper straps to receive a consistent fit, time after time. In addition, the preset upper straps prevent uncomfortable snags during donning and doffing, and also provide a tighter, more secure seal. Wearers also can choose the new European-style Advantage harness, which dons like a catcher’s mask.

| | ADVANTAGE® 4000 RESPIRATORS | | | | | The new Advantage 4000 Twin Port Full-Face Respirator raises the performance of industrial full-facepiece respirators to a new level. Based on the Advantage 3000 Facepiece, the respirator features a wraparound lens combined with a soft, pliable Hycar or silicone facepiece that provides a total solution to your air-purifying needs. Its fit technology is based on the proven face seal of the Ultra Elite Facepiece. For the utmost convenience, the Advantage 4000 uses the same cartridges and filters as the Advantage 200 LS and Advantage 3000 Respirator. In addition, the facepiece lens has scratch-resistant coating and has been engineered to be optically correct, giving you superior visibility and peripheral vision. The Advantage 4000 Respirator enhances worker performance through a new design that allows low breathing resistance and includes a standard nose cup that reduces fogging in low temperatures or high humidity conditions. Options include spectacle kits for corrective lenses, coverlens and welders adapter. Donning the mask is made easier with a comfortable net-type harness with a four-point adjustable suspension. Wearers also can choose pre-adjustable rubber straps. ADVANTAGE 4000 RESPIRATOR

It can be used with a family of filters and chemical cartridges for protection against articulates, toxic gases and vapors, or a combination of these hazards. The OptimAir 6A includes a motor/blower module and rechargeable NiCad battery and is designed to operate for a full shift. It uses only two filters. The unit is available with full or half-mask facepieces, or a hood. Hooded OptimAir 6A PAPRs are only approved for use with the OptiFilter Type HE Cartridges only. Applications include hazardous materials cleanup, asbestos and lead paint abatement, chemical processing, foundry, smelter and coke oven applications, and nuclear facilities work.
| | | | | | | | ADVANTAGE CARTRIDGES
| | | | | | | Designed for easy installation, Advantage cartridges use the latest bayonet-style mounting design. Featuring a low lug height and lead-in connectors, the cartridges lock into place with a single twist. An advanced engineering design makes negative pressure fit-testing easier to perform. Filter cartridges protect against dusts, particles and mists. Chemical cartridges protect against gases and vapors. Combination cartridges deliver protection from both particulate and gaseous contaminants. All cartridges are interchangeable between the Advantage 200 and 1000 respirators and are colour-coded.
| | | | | | Center Support Spectacle
Side Support Spectacle
| | SPECTACLE KITS FOR FULL-FACEPIECE RESPIRATORS | | | | | | For use by workers who must wear corrective lenses, the Spectacle Kit can be easily inserted into the facepiece. The kit includes a wire support, rubber guide, and pair of metal-frame spectacles. Desired adjustment is obtained by moving the spectacles in and out of the rubber guide and up and down the wire support. The Ultravue/Ultra-Twin kits (S-7 shape, 44-mm lens size) and the Ultra Elite kit (S-7 shape, 48-mm lens size ) fit Universal Bridge Corrective Lenses that can be obtained from local sources. The Spectacle Kit can be used with a nosecup. There are two kits for the Ultra Elite facepiece; one uses a side wire support to hold the lenses in the facepiece, while the other uses a center support to position the unit (spectacle adjustments are similar).

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | AIR-PURIFYING RESPIRATOR FIT-TEST ACCESSORIES
| | | | | | | | The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires fit tests to ensure proper fit for workers who use respirators. Quantitative testing methods rely on objective data to determine a proper fit. Qualitative fit-test methods are subjective in nature and rely on the judgment of the test subject. | BITREX QUALITATIVE FIT-TEST KIT | Bitrex QLFT Kit
